AMAS FAQ

What is the AMAS?

The Asheville Marine Aquarium Society is a non-profit organization whose goals are to educate and share knowledge in responsible marine and reef aquarium care. We are also involved in programs to protect and save the world's coral reefs, and to sponsor local programs to educate the public. The AMAS is managed and run by a group of volunteers. We are 100% funded by memberships and sponsors.

Is the AMAS an Asheville-only group?

No. We have meetings and other activities in the city of Asheville, North Carolina and have local members who participate throughout North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. We are also global in scope - our Forum has registered users from all parts of the world.

How often do you have meetings?

We meet every other month on the first Wednesday of the month at 6PM. Our meeting place changes from time to time. Currently our meetings are held in the private banquet room at the Cornerstone Restaurant in Asheville. All upcoming meetings are announced on the home page and details are in our monthly newsletter.

What goes on at the meetings?

Sometimes we have a hands-on activity (i.e., fragging, rock making) and other times we have a guest speaker or presentations by members regarding reef and marine fish aquariums. At every meeting, we have a $1 raffle where you can win fish, corals, or aquarium equipment.

If I register for the Forum, do I become a member?

No. You become a registered user. We invite you to register and be our guest in participating on our Forums. To become a member, click here. Members help pay for the web site and other expenses to keep the club running.

How much does it cost to be a member, and what benefits do I get?

We ask for a $30 donation for a one year membership. As a member, you get these benefits:

  • Special discounts at select local fish shops.
  • Our monthly newsletter mailed to your home or business.
  • An account in our Photo Gallery to post your own aquarium photos and movies.
  • Participation in our Photo of the Month contest.
  • Eligibility in our Featured Tank program.
  • Recognition on the Forum with an "I Support AMAS" badge next to your posts.
  • Attendance at all our meetings and outings.
  • Free frags, moonlights, and other goodies at our regular meetings.
And most important, knowing that you are doing something to support the marine aquarium hobby in WNC. To find out more about becoming a member, click here.

I'm not into the member thing. Can I just donate a few bucks to support your cause?

We are grateful for any donation you can afford. Click the "Paypal Donation" image on our home page to make a donation for any amount you choose using your credit or debit card.

Do I have to be a member to attend meetings?

Most of our meetings are open to the general public, and we encourage you to attend and see what we're all about. We hope that when you meet all the great and friendly saltwater fish people here in Asheville that you will consider making a donation- but no strings attached.

I'm a freshwater guy thinking about saltwater. Is this group for me?

Yes! We pride ourselves in helping "newbies" get over the hurdles and establishing their first marine aquarium. We also have members who keep freshwater tanks that can help.

I am a retailer or manufacturer and may be interested in becoming a sponsor. What's involved?

Send email or forum private mail to Joe Jaworski for more information. We have several inexpensive sponsor programs that will promote your local or internet business through our banner advertising.
